Measurement Guide
How to measure your windows
A precise, stress-free guide to getting measurements right the first time.
Inside Mount
The shade sits inside the window frame for a clean, built-in look. Measure the exact window opening.
- • Width: smallest of three measurements
- • Height: smallest of three measurements
- • Depth: at least 2" for most products
Outside Mount
The shade mounts outside the frame, covering it completely. Great for shallow windows or hiding trim.
- • Width: window width + 2–4" overlap
- • Height: window height + 2–4" overlap
- • Measure the area you want to cover
Step-by-Step
Use a steel tape measure
Cloth tapes stretch. Always use a rigid steel tape for accurate readings.
Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch
Precision matters for a custom fit. Round down, never up, for inside mounts.
Measure width in three places
Measure across the top, middle, and bottom; use the smallest width for inside mounts.
Measure height in three places
Measure left, center, and right; use the smallest for inside, the longest for outside.
Check for obstructions
Note handles, cranks, vents, or trim that may affect mounting depth or clearance.
Common Mistakes
- ✕ Forgetting to account for window handles and cranks
- ✕ Measuring the wrong side (outside vs inside mount matters!)
- ✕ Swapping width and height — always width first
- ✕ Not measuring every window — even 'identical' windows vary
- ✕ Rounding up on inside mounts (causes blinds that don't fit)
Pro Tips
- ✓ Draw a quick sketch of each window and label measurements
