Sheer, light-filtering, or blackout? A simple guide to picking the perfect fabric.

Choosing the Right Fabric

The fabric you choose does more than set the look — it defines how your room feels, how much light comes in, and how much privacy you get.

Sheer fabrics diffuse light beautifully and keep a room feeling open and airy. They're perfect for living rooms where you want to preserve your view. At night, though, they offer little privacy.

Light-filtering fabrics are the most popular middle ground. They soften bright sunlight, reduce glare, and give you daytime privacy. You can still see out, but people can't see in clearly.

Room-darkening and blackout fabrics block most or all light. They're ideal for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and night-shift workers who need to sleep during the day.

Don't forget to consider color. Light fabrics bounce light around a room; darker fabrics absorb it and can make a space feel cozier or smaller. Natural textures like linen and woven wood add warmth and depth.

When in doubt, request free fabric samples. Seeing a swatch in your actual lighting is the best way to choose.
